We think sustainable development is a very simple idea. It's about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. This idea is at the heart of P&G's Purpose, which – for more than 170 years – has been focused on improving people's lives with branded products and services they use every day. In fact, in 2009, we were proud to be selected as one of the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations" by Corporate Knights Inc. and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors Inc.
By incorporating sustainability into the rhythm of our work, we delight consumers who want to make sustainable choices but do not want to make trade-offs in performance or value. We see this as an inspiring business challenge and are confident that our unwavering commitment, along with our unrivaled global scale and scope, will allow us to better integrate economic progress, social development, and environmental concerns into everything we do.

One of the most important ways we fulfill our sustainability efforts is by working hard to improve lives in the communities where P&G people live and work through corporate and volunteer support of humanitarian and social cause efforts. For example, P&G is keenly focused on the development of children in need, ages 0-13, through our global cause, P&G Live, Learn and Thrive™.
The global signature program for P&G Live, Learn and Thrive is Children's Safe Drinking Water. This program addresses the more than 5,000 children who die every day from diseases caused by drinking unsafe water. As part of this program, P&G has developed a low-cost technology ("PUR" packets) to purify contaminated water. To date, P&G has provided "PUR" packets to global relief groups, yielding more than 200 million liters of safe drinking water, which is helping reduce illness and death among children in some of the poorest parts of the world.
